Aalborg Portland is leading one of Denmark’s most ambitious CCS initiatives through the ACCSION project. From 2030, the project aims to capture and permanently store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, making a significant contribution to Denmark’s climate ambitions while strengthening North Denmark’s position as a leading CCUS hub

The ports of Aalborg and Hirtshals provide critical infrastructure for the future CCUS value chain in North Denmark. Together, they offer access to international transport routes, industrial clusters and energy infrastructure, supporting the movement of materials, technologies and captured CO₂ between producers, storage sites and global partners.
Geological CO₂ storage opportunities
Geological storage opportunities are an essential part of North Denmark’s CCUS ecosystem. With access to suitable storage sites and strong industrial demand for carbon management solutions, the region is well positioned to support the safe and permanent storage of captured CO₂ as part of the green transition.

Political Framework for Decarbonisation in Denmark
Climate Act of 2019 commits Denmark to reducing CO2 emissions by 70% by 2030 compared with 1990 - and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
The Danish approach combines climate ambition with economic competitiveness and social welfare.
Key policy instruments include:
- Renewable energy, particularly offshore wind.
- Electrificationof transport, industry, and heating.
- Carbon pricing and participation in the EU Emissions Trading System.
- Power-to-X technologies for green fuels.
